FAQs

How do I purchase your work?

My work is only available through my website. I do not sell on any other platform.

Why is beadwork so expensive?

I chose to answer this question first because this is often the first question I get when people experience what is known as “sticker shock” in terms of the pricing of any kind of handcrafted beadwork or metal jewelry. My best answer is to break it down into parts. Let’s begin with the pragmatic and that is LABOR. Beadwork as well as any metal smithing take a tremendous amount of labor. Some pieces that I do can take 8+ hours and I’ve even had pieces take over that as well in terms of labor hours. Next up is materials and supplies. Especially when the economy is in a recession or a major global crisis such as a pandemic, it is going to affect the cost of the material and supplies. Finally, I want to point out that it takes education and practice hours to continue expanding a jewelry artist’s skills. We are constantly expanding what we can do. All of my pieces are priced according to labor and materials.

What does “made to order” or “pre-order” mean?

Some jewelers call this “preorders” and some use the term “made to order.” This means that I have created an original piece and from there I take orders on that particular piece or pairs, if it is earrings. This helps me keep a low overhead, test if a style will do well in the market, and also be able to model my work as I interact out in the world. It also allows the freedom of changing the colors of a particular style easily so more than one color can be offered in that style if that is what customers request. Made to order pieces or pairs are made individually for each person, as are any handmade ear wires.

The beadwork looks so intricate. Is it heavy?

Beadwork, although often intricate, is surprisingly lightweight.

Is your work for a specific gender?

The jewelry I make is for EVERYONE. Jewelry has no gender. And anyone can wear beadwork of any kind as well as metal work.

Can non-Native or Indigenous people wear Indigenous beadwork?

The easy answer to this is YES! We want you to purchase from Indigenous beaders as many of us continue to use traditional craft and skill to support ourselves and our communities.

There may be times I make available certain designs that are only wearable by Indigenous and Afro-Indigenous people due to the symbolism.

I notice a majority of your work is contemporary or modern, do you also do traditional work?

Although much of my work is contemporary and I consider what I do wearable art, I draw my inspiration from traditional craft. And I also create traditional pieces using elements from my tribe and culture. If you are looking for something a bit more traditional but do not see any pieces in my shop, do not hesitate to contact me about custom work when my custom vouchers open. In addition, if you are a Native or Indigenous person who wants to wear my work, but find finances are a barrier, please reach out, I offer discounts and trades specifically to Indigenous and Native people.

I absolutely love your work, but want you to create something specific for me, do you do custom work?

If you are interested in custom work, please reach out to me via the contact form. Keep in mind my que for custom work usually is around 6 weeks+ till completion. I recommend you request your custom work as soon as possible to be able to get into the que. Custom work must resemble the work that I have already done. I do not accept inspiration photos from other artists or jewelers.

What is the general timeframe guidelines for completion of custom or made to order work?

There are a couple factors that determine ETA of completed projects. First, the supply that is available ebbs and flows in terms of specific materials. It takes time to research designs, sketch them or create a design from scratch in my head directly to the design work, as well as sourcing materials. Often times, materials may change as well, meaning that lot dyes change and this could change the aesthetic of a remake or made to order. Trying to make sure that matches are either as close as possible OR if radically different do not change the general aesthetic of a design. Second, I am a disabled artist. When you purchase from me you are helping my survival in a world that is not made for disabled people. My disability was caused by medical negligence and includes being immunocompromised and chronically ill; so it is permanent and any recovery and rehab simply takes a bit longer, this affects my ability to work 8+ hours a day. In addition, in between custom and made to order, I create collections or one of kind work to keep it fresh and inspiring. I am a one man show. That being said, I am very communicative as a small business owner and artist; my clients are the backbone of my small business, they are patient and kind and fully understand that my work is worth the wait.

As of April 2024, my workload is a consistent 8-10 weeks rolling production. Although those times are getting shorter, my work is slow made with intention and attention to detail and quality control.

How should I care for my beadwork?

Although I include instructions how to care for your wearable beadwork art in every shipment sent out, I think it is important that you have something to reference in terms of care.

  • Keep your beadwork out of the direct sunlight when storing. This may cause damage to the glass beads and cause them to fade.

  • Always store your beadwork hanging. Do not leave it in a pile on a surface or inside of a jewelry box. This can cause the beaded threads to become tangled.

  • Polish your beadwork with a soft cloth. If you have beadwork that includes any sort of leather, gently spot clean.

  • Do not wear your beadwork in the shower, to bed, or when exercising. This could damage thread and beads themselves.

  • Do not attempt to repair beadwork yourself by cutting threads or re-beading. If you have beadwork that is in need of repair, please contact me so I can do this for you. In addition, if you happen to lose one side of your earrings, please contact me for an estimate on remaking that particular side. Do not attempt to hire another beader to recreate my designs. My work is copyrighted and MOST beaders will not recreate other beader’s designs, at least the ethical ones.

The beadwork and wearable art jewelry that I make is meant to be of heirloom quality, take good care of yours and it will last a lifetime for you to pass down. Should you require repair, all pieces come with a lifetime repair guarantee. This means all you have to do is reach out to me and we will arrange repair work.
